Work can so often be meaningless, mechanical, monotonous, or moronic. As Albert Camus, the French philosopher, put it: ‘Without work, all life goes rotten but when work is soulless, life stifles and dies’. Productive, purposeful work is to be preferred to ‘hopeless labour’.
