'Once that shut down happens, then that experience is frozen. So it is not a case of a threatening memory being repressed, it is that it has never gotten in properly. Once it is frozen it is outside of time, so twenty years later this can be activated - some everyday event can trigger it and you then experience it as if it is happening now. You don't think about it and remember it - you feel it and experience it. And of course at that point you think you are going nuts because you look around and nothing traumatic is happening, yet you experience this traumatic feeling'
'It was exactly 5 years since I had my first therapy session with Ivor Browne. Due to ageism people laughed at me at the time for going to see an 82 year old man. He is now nearly 88 and still full of up-to-date expertise, wisdom, insight and knowledge. Ivor showed compassion, empathy and understanding for the emotional distress I had been through and listened to my human story in an open minded way.'

'Where Mata Amritanandamayi encountered people in need, she brought them food and clothing from her own home. She was undeterred by the scolding and punishment she received from her family for doing so. She also began to spontaneously embrace people to comfort them in their sorrow. Responding to her affectionate care, they began to call her Amma.'
'I wonder if it's common for drivers in Bhutan to keep the peace like he does. With a speed limit of a whole 50 km on highways and even less on roads this is one country where driving pretty much has to be a practice of mindfulness. With roads that never seem to go straight for more than a few hundred metres there's ample need to keep attention on the task, and with stunning mountain views there's an equally ample reason to appreciate the natural beauty.'

'But Buddhist ethics is very far from the kind of system that makes us suspicious of our own natures, and calls on us to distort our own natures. Buddhist ethics doesn't see human nature as something that has to be beaten into submission, tamed, or domesticated. Buddhism is about fulfilling our human nature, not diminishing or even crippling it, and Buddhist ethics is both part of the way to that fulfilment and the expression of that fulfilment.'
'Years ago when I was seeing people for therapy as a psychologist, I used to watch patients that I worked with and watch where things change, and then I watched it more when I started teaching mindfulness, and the best way I could describe that moment of change at the time was that the person just softened to themselves.'

'Sex involves much more - pleasure, emotional connection, relationships, fantasy, and spirituality to name a few! The sexuality spectrum involves this broader view of sexuality.
When psychologists started doing research about sexuality they quickly ran into a problem - how would they ask people to identify their sexual orientation?'
'I had been ushered into a world that was completely unfamiliar. I was in a place with no reference points, and where my usual 'answers' were completely unhelpful. Through gentle physical movements to open our bodies, and more strenuous ones to awaken dormant areas, we were gradually reintroduced to ourselves from the expanded perspective of Indigenous Mind. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done.'

'Yet, what we eat has a huge influence not only over our well-being. In the age old Indian spiritual tradition that is the root of mindfulness, yoga, and Ayurveda, food is classified according to its effect on the body and mind. This system uses the three Gunas: Sattva (the quality of love, light and life), Raja (the quality of activity and passion, lacking stability) and Tamas (the quality of darkness and inertia, dragging us into ignorance and attachment).'
'Ancient civilisations knew this and used a variety of instruments ranging from drums, harps, flutes, and pipes combined with singing or chanting in locations which promoted sensory immersion and deprivation - such as drumming beats in dark caves. It was clear that reducing the input from the external environment into a focused and immersive state created the conditions for expanded, beneficial states of consciousness.'

'I stopped. Perhaps it is more truthful to say I was stopped, arrested in my tracks by a tree. It possessed a strong trunk, elegant limbs, and was on the point of budding. But my seeing was not what stayed with me. Rather it was the felt sense of my own body/being in conversation with the being/body full tree, striking in it's beauty, rootedness, reaching upward and outward into the space that I call a road.'
'There are many professionals who promote the myth that they do their best work under pressure. If their stress reaction is positive and they are not creating physical, mental or emotional issues that would be fine. The truth is that that so-called 'good stress' causes just as much ill-health as 'bad stress'. Your body does not know the difference between them.'

'It is ethnocentric in the sense that it has been formulated and promoted by Western materialistic scientists, who consider their own perspective to be superior to that of any other human groups at any time of history. According to them, matter is primary and life, consciousness, and intelligence are its more or less accidental side products. Spirituality of any form and level of sophistication reflects ignorance of scientific facts, superstition, child-like gullibility, self-deception, and primitive magical thinking.'
'I worked a long time on the idea of a good death. I wondered how it is that things have come to what they are now, for dying people and their families and their caregivers. I started teaching that dying people deserved dying-centered care, a complete novelty then and probably now.'

'Ora et labora is the motto of the Benedictine order. Pray and work. Your work is your prayer. Now this is often not experienced as such by us. So we must distinguish between a job and work. They are not the same thing. A job is what we do, our work is who we are. It is the difference between having and being.'
'The life story book is an ongoing part of the therapeutic process, and once the therapy ends, the book remains with the individual. As a facilitator, I have seen self-esteem enhanced, relationships within the individual's personal life better understood and explained. There is often greater self-understanding and a reduction in feelings of helplessness and anxiety.'
This is the first time Amrita Yoga is being taught in Ireland, and also the first time the Director of Amrita Yoga Bri. Shobana will travel outside of India to hold classes. It is an opportunity not to be missed.
'There are behaviours that in the early days of a relationship, which we pretty much all do without thinking about them too much. But unbeknownst to us these small things nourish and strengthen our relationship. Unfortunately, as our relationship becomes long-term and we become again more focused on our own lives, many of us stop doing these all important small things.'
'The amount of ritual and complexity for preparation of plants for smoking varied from place to place; in ancient Egypt there were very complex recipes and formulae for creating incenses, as there continue to be in places such as India, Nepal and Japan where burning incense is seen as an important part of spiritual rituals.'
